The words online gambling can describe several different products. In North Carolina, the legal answer depends on what is being offered, who regulates it, where the wager is made, and which authority supports the activity.

Chapter 18C, Article 9 creates a sports-wagering framework. It does not turn every online casino product into sports wagering. The correct question is always: what exactly is the operator offering, and what authority covers that product?
Why the distinction matters
Sports-wagering rules include requirements about licensed operators, interactive accounts, age, location, and the events that may be wagered on. A casino-style game is a different activity with a different risk and regulatory question.
North Carolina also has a separate statutory path for certain Class III tribal gaming on Indian lands when the required compact and federal-approval conditions are met. That context does not create a general statewide online casino license.
A safer way to read a promotion
If an advertisement says legal in North Carolina
, identify the product before accepting the claim. A sports-betting authorization is not proof that a casino game, poker room, or slots product is authorized. Look for the operator, license, jurisdiction, age rule, location rule, and current source.
